Sam Spillane, Class of 2006
Sam was practically born on campus as his Dad was head of school for 17 years. So we didn’t have to explain to him what the camping program was all about, he pretty much understood it.
“I like to be outside,” Sam says. He’s an avid fisherman, hunter, kayaker and pretty much all around outside guy. Sam is a good student, and has been known to dabble in drama.
Sam is a day student and he is involved in sports like hockey. He says the Whiteman mix of activities and academics suits him just fine. The only thing he doesn’t like? Computers. “I just don’t like them.” Probably because they represent the opposite of being outside and enjoying the nature.
In October, 2004, Sam had a harrowing brush with death. While hunting, he and friends were preparing an elk to load on to packs. Sam stepped backward on to an arrow which had been used to hold the carcass in position. It went right through his achilles heal and into an artery. Yet it was Sam who calmed his friends and helped them through rescuing HIM! Search and Rescue was dispatched and Sam was air lifted to a hospital in Denver.
He was back at school on crutches one week later, smiling and showing his always easy manner is still intact. Way to go, Sam. Hope it doesn’t affect hockey too much. It’s doubtful it will.
