College Counseling
At the Lowell Whiteman School, we see the college process as an educational one. At its best, the process allows students to learn more about themselves and the choices that they make. We encourage students to find colleges that are good matches for them, both as students and individuals. Although many students begin standardized testing and college planning in the sophomore year, the formal college process begins in the second semester of their junior year and continues throughout their senior year.
A Successful Process
Meg Morse, Director of College Counseling, has years of experience and a tried and true method of helping students through the college application jungle. Step by step, students are presented with a clear set of objectives, tools and to-do lists meant to make the process less overwhelming and challenging for students and their families. American High School parents report that senior year for their students is the most stressful and confusing of the primary school years. Pressure to get into the right college and the complexity of how to do it are listed as the biggest concerns. At LWS, Meg Morse works with smaller groups of applying students than most schools; this one-to-one asisstance is rare and one of the best features of the LWS college prep program. Parents are kept informed during the process and educated along with their students.
The LWS College process also makes use of Naviance online software which is state-of-the-art in college applications. This allows students and our Director to keep track of their pending and completed applications, essays and letters of recommendations in one central location. Even when foreign travelers and competitors are on the road or home for summer vacation, they can continue to work on college applications.
