the Lowell Whiteman School fosters the personal growth of its students

Annual Campaign

Parents’ Annual Campaign 2007-08

The culture of philanthropy at Lowell Whiteman School has evolved dramatically in recent years.  Thanks in large part to recurring and increasing Annual Fund gifts from an ever-expanding number of parents, today LWS is on more solid financial ground than ever before.  Nevertheless, as is the case with most independent schools, there is still a gap between operating expenses and revenue from student tuition. This perennial gap reflects the school’s commitment to annually increase our investment in two essential elements of an LWS education:

1) Resources to enhance the learning experience for students

2) Competitive compensation necessary to attract and retain a strong faculty and staff

Students, parents and alumni frequently emphasize that the relationships between faculty, staff and students are the most treasured element of The Whiteman Experience. LWS’s current budget reflects this priority with increases in faculty/staff compensation and funds designated for graduate study and professional development.  An example of the latter was the recent NOLS Risk Management Evaluation of our outdoor program and their Leadership Development education for faculty and staff.  The training will result in enhanced student safety and leadership opportunities. The strength of the 2006-2007 Annual Campaign also resulted in investments in classroom technology, including additional overhead projectors, TVs and LCD projectors. Students will directly benefit from these purchases this year.

There is exciting momentum developing with the Annual Campaign.  Our goal is to increase the size of the Annual Fund by a minimum of 5% each year so that LWS can make strategic investments in materials and equipment to enhance student learning, and plan increases in faculty/staff compensation.  In 2007-2008 we are also striving for 100% parent participation, which is critically important when the school approaches foundations for funding.  Your tax deductible contribution is vital to the financial strength and overall excellence of the school.
