Throughout the last fifty years, Lowell Whiteman School students and faculty have shared a strong sense of place.  In addition to the school’s challenging, dynamic programs and close-knit community, this sense of place is an integral part of the “Lowell Whiteman Experience.”   It emerges from our collective appreciation and respect for the spectacular Rocky Mountain setting of our campus and the rustic, welcoming nature of the facilities.

The time has come for the Lowell Whiteman School to take a very significant step forward.  A comprehensive campus planning process has been underway since November 2005.  Representation from all constituencies in this process has promoted creativity, collaboration, strategic orientation and clarity of purpose. The school’s mission serves as the fundamental, guiding framework for the process, as we continually strive to honor our heritage and plan for the future.

Now, over two years from the initiation of the process, we are pleased to announce an exciting, forward-looking, environmentally conscious comprehensive campus plan (click on “LWS Campus Master Plan” link to view the plan). The LWS Campus Master Plan is a 10 year plan with a 25 year vision.  Our intent is to create a campus that inspires a pride of place, including:

Campus facilities that reinforce the spirit of the Lowell Whiteman Experience

Campus facilities that promote the overall excellence of the teaching and learning environment

Residential student housing that inspires prospective families to commit to and remain at LWS

Homes for faculty, staff and administrators that help to recruit and retain dedicated, talented, versatile educators

We are emphasizing sustainability and green building practices throughout the process. Implementation of the Campus Master Plan will:

Provide no more square footage under roof than necessary

Create energy efficient buildings (renovate and construct)

Subordinate the built environment to the natural environment

Preserve the rural character of the campus

Develop common architectural theme

Present a much more attractive public face to Routt County Road 36

Remove vehicular traffic from center of campus

Result in a campus that facilitates our mission-focused work with students

The Campus Plan Steering Committee is actively guiding implementation of the plan.   Members include David Hill, Chair; Walt Daub; Randall Reed; Jim Spillane; Adrienne Southworth; Kevin Ventrudo; Nancy Ventrudo; Lane Malone, ex officio; Heidi Nunnikhoven, ex officio.

The LWS Campus Master Plan was presented to the Routt County Planning Commission on January 17th, 2008.  The commissioners unanimously approved the campus plan at the conceptual level.
