Day Program

There are three great middle schools in Steamboat (including The Lowell Whiteman Primary School), and a robust home-schooling network as well.  From that pool of students, LWS is looking to enroll between eight to twelve of the best, most dedicated local students every year.

Between one-third and forty percent of our students are day students, benefitting from the small classes, great teachers, and diverse collection of boarding students that choose to live and learn in Steamboat.  The day students participate in all of the same activities and programs as the boarding students, though they don’t, generally speaking, eat breakfast or dinner at the school.  They are part of the job system, and every day student understands that the expectations for them at LWS are much higher than what they would find at other schools.  LWS day students and their families appreciate that this is not a cookie-cutter education, and that academic and physical rigors are part of the experience.

Day students are involved in all of the school’s camping and outdoor trips, and are always encouraged to participate in the weekend activities.  While it’s not a requirement, the school is hopeful that day families will open their homes from time to time to host boarding students, giving them a chance to experience Steamboat more fully.
