Boarding Program
For an all-encompassing education that fosters the best in scholarship, citizenship, and overall personal growth, there is no better option than a boarding school like The Lowell Whiteman School.
The Lowell Whiteman School was founded in 1957 as a boarding school, and to this day, the school’s primary focus is on the boarding population, which typically makes up about 60% of the student body. Boarding students eat meals together in the dining hall, attend evening study halls, and make plenty of use of the school’s facilities, such as the gym, weight room, and trampoline. On the weekends, the Student Activity Club helps plan activities in and around Steamboat, as well as camping trips or longer trips to Denver for a bit of city life.
The three alpine-styled residence halls—two boys’ and one girls’—are run by a Residential Head and a Residential Assistant. Additionally, on-campus faculty help manage the dorms, proctoring study halls in the evening and helping govern student activities during the weekends. There are single rooms, doubles, triples in the girls’ dorm, and even two quads in one of the boys’ dorms. The living quarters are comfortable but not overdone, and each hall has a student lounge with amenities such as a refrigerator, small stove, washer and dryer, and tv and video game set up. The dorms are all wired, and students can decorate their rooms in an appropriately comfortable manner. Boarding students share the duties of dorm upkeep, rotating common jobs over a two-week period.
An appropriate set of rules governs the live of our boarding students, keeping every students’ health, safety, and well-being at the forefront of our oversight. Students are checked in every night be the On Duty faculty member in their respective dorms, and morning sign-ins at breakfast are required. The faculty handle and administer all prescribed and OTC medications.
The food at LWS is healthy and thoughtfully prepared. As a small school, we don’t have cafeteria-styled options. A main entrée and side dish are standard at every meal, and a salad bar is available at lunch and dinner. Fruit is always available, and we provide a mid-morning snack most weekdays.
