Johnny Spillane, Class of 1999 -- Olympic Triple Silver Medalist in a 2010 Olympic Moment. "Lowell Whiteman School made it possible for me to do what I've done. If you get an opportunity to go to a school like this, take it! I recognized what I had here and it really made it possible for me to get where I am."
About Steamboat Springs
Information and Links on this Page:
Our founder, Lowell Whiteman, knew what he was doing when he chose Steamboat (his hometown) as a site for a boys' adventure camp and then a co-ed college preparatory school. He knew that the stunning location and the opportunity for so many activities would prove irresistible. We have provided links to other pages to help you learn more about this beautiful town (See below).
There are several things you can count on when you visit Steamboat: rich western heritage, small-town hospitality, and lots of snow. With an average of nearly 30 feet of snowfall every season, you can expect to relish many satisfying powder days. But it’s not just any snow here in Steamboat; we have the driest and fluffiest snow in the world. It’s so different, we coined the phrase Champagne Powder®. In fact, meteorologists have measured Steamboat’s Champagne Powder® as having 70% less moisture content than average. Steamboat Springs is an authentic ranching/mining town turned ski/ride and summer playground. Ranching is still a part of the community today and is one reason Steamboat retains its sense of history and Old West flavor. In the summer the population is 10,000, yet once the snow begins to fly, that number swells to 20,000 many of whom are avid ski bums and visitors. Steamboat is a destination resort, 157 miles northwest of Denver, 85 miles north of I-70, and 11 miles from the Continental Divide. Steamboat offers world-class skiing/riding and competitive facilities during the winter months; golf, fishing, white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, mountain biking and many other sports are available during the spring, summer and fall.
Transportation
Buses, taxis and commuter flights link Steamboat Springs with Denver. During ski season, there are commercial flights to the Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden (28 miles away). The 185-mile drive from Denver offers spectacular scenery. In town, free hybrid bus service runs regularly between town and the mountain, and to many other destinations as well. Alpine Taxi (970-879-8294) provides limo and taxi service locally, as well as to and from Denver. See How to Get Here for directions.

Steamboat Information Links
Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation
There are 2,939 acres (1176 hectares) of permitted terrain offering a diversity of trails for all levels of ability. Steamboat provides snowmaking on many of the popular runs. Gladed areas of Sunshine and Storm Peaks are Steamboat’s particular claim to fame, with “champagne powder” in the trees for the most avid powder hounds. The Morningside Park Expansion opened 179 acres of new terrain at Steamboat. The four-phase Pioneer Ridge Expansion, is a 770-acre area of intermediate and advanced terrain to the north of the existing ski area. We also have the best ski/ride or tele instructors in the world. For those interested in really whooping it up, Steamboat offers a terrain park called Mavericks with a superpipe serviced exclusively by its own chairlift. It features terrain for all ability levels spread over 11.8 acres, an outdoor sound system, professional designed rails and jumps. Snow-making installed specifically for this area allows Steamboat to open Mavericks sooner than most pipes in Colorado.
