the Lowell Whiteman School fosters the personal growth of its students

Letter From the Head of School

Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends of LWS,

With all of the Whiteman Experience’s emphasis on the broad development of students- including our commitment to community service, foreign travel and active involvement in sports and the outdoors-the intellectual growth and academic preparation of our students is a primary emphasis.

According to an Independent School Management study, the greatest gains in student test scores were found to be a result of, in rank order: 1) increased teacher education, 2) increased teacher salaries and 3) increased teacher experience. As proud as we are of our small classes, decreased student/pupil ratio was a surprising fourth in that list of influences. More significant, however, we all know, than a teacher’s years of experience or his salary are his commitment to students, the quality of his mind, and his passion for his subject. No study can measure those qualities, but students know, and they tell us over and over with remarkable consistency, who the good and the great teachers are.

From the early years to today, the Lowell Whiteman School has attracted remarkable people-especially effective educators and adult mentors like George Tolles, John Whittum, Joe Roberts, Bob “the Bear” Bear, Joanne “Doc” Lasko, Ralph Quintana, Bob “Mr. K.” Krautkramer, Gordon and Molly Brown-to name only some of the faculty who have been influential in Whiteman student lives.

LWS is committed to its tradition of a strong faculty who value the intellectual and personal development of students. We seek faculty with solid backgrounds from rigorous undergraduate programs. The Board of Trustees has designated a fund to support graduate study, and our financial model provides for aggressive increases in faculty compensation packages. These efforts are making a difference. We are very enthusiastic about our current team of proven experienced educators and committed young teachers. LWS faculty enjoy working with youth and it shows.

Warm regards,
Walt Daub, Head of School
