the Lowell Whiteman School fosters the personal growth of its students

Faculty & Staff Profiles

The Lowell Whiteman School teachers are diverse individuals who bring with them a broad range of educational backgrounds and talents. Roughly half of the faculty members have been with LWS fifteen or more years. The Academic Dean, who holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Literary Studies and Music, has 33 years in education, 23 with LWS. Faculty members teach courses in the classroom and direct activities in the out of doors. LWS teachers hold degrees in their field and are expert skiers, rock climbers, backpackers, horseback riders, and kayakers. Joe Roberts — a 38-year Whiteman veteran who teaches Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 1 — has traveled with students to Europe, Africa, and Asia. Brick Root, math and science teacher, has climbed all of the “fourteeners” in the continental United States. Jim Linville, a key member of Routt County Search and Rescue, teaches French, math, geography, kayaking, and telemark skiing. Dean of Students Mitch Globe, in addition to teaching film, Geometry, and English, offers Judo as a fall activity. Trenia Sanford, Director of Technology and computer teacher, runs the horse program. Two of our teachers, John Marno (Computers and Precalculus) and Erin Davis (French), have also coached at the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

Three House Parents provide supervision, life skills, and recreation opportunities for students in the residential program. Kathy Rosemond has an M.A. in Education with a specialty in Learning Disabilities. Brian Smith coaches wrestling and teaches Advanced Placement Calculus 2. Cameron McVey, who holds a Masters in Communication, sponsors the school’s meditation club.

LWS’s intern program brings young faculty members to the school on a yearly basis. Interns work in both the academic and residential programs. Four superb educators joined the faculty for the 2007-2008 year. Steve Sandak, a telemark skier and Colby grad, teaches English. Adam Smith taught history in British Guyana; this year he teaches a senior elective, Post World War II History. Peter Hall, a Middlebury grad, teaches Spanish II.  Courtney Holden will be an Intern at Elizabeth Hall this year as well as a member of the English faculty teaching English III.

Our versatile LWS teachers are serious about education and the future, including college placement, of their graduates. Strong relationships between students and teachers are at the heart of a Lowell Whiteman School education.
