The Lowell Whiteman School (LWS) is seeking qualified individuals to fill the following positions for the 2008-2009 school year:

English Teacher   The Lowell Whiteman School seeks a full-time English Teacher. Responsibilities include leading outdoor and foreign trips, along with other more traditional teaching duties. A strong academic background in English and literature and demonstrated success working with teenagers are required. Spanish Teacher  The Lowell Whiteman School seeks a full-time Spanish teacher, who can teach all levels Spanish through year V and provide leadership for a strong Spanish program generally. Responsibilities also include leading outdoor and foreign trips, along with other more traditional school duties. A strong academic background in Spanish, a passion for the language and culture, along with a facility for teaching it are required, as is a demonstrated success working with teenagers. The Lowell Whiteman School Fellowship Program for 2008-2009   Founded in 1957, The Lowell Whiteman School is a small college preparatory co-educational boarding/day school, grades 9 –12, situated in the Rocky Mountains of northwestern Colorado. A rich, full academic experience is complemented with an extensive experiential program. Students commit to either foreign travel or competitive skiing/riding. The school has a strong residential program for boarding students.

There are three or four residential-teaching fellowships offered each year—one in the girls’ residence hall, one in each of the two boys’ residences and, some years, a fourth that entails teaching and admission or development work. Generally, a fellow’s primary responsibilities involve teaching two classes and supervising’ residential students. Fellows are also responsible for supervising afternoon activities and assisting faculty leaders on outdoor and wilderness trips. Therefore, experience in some of the following is necessary: backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing, snow boarding, horseback riding, kayaking/canoeing. Outdoor certifications are valued.

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in an academic discipline. Currently, we are in special need of a female fellow with an undergraduate degree in English who can provide residential leadership in Elizabeth Hall - LWS’s girls’ dorm. Both male fellowship positions have been filled for the 2008-2009 school year.  Advanced degrees are an advantage, as is any demonstrated success teaching, regardless of the setting.

Candidates should have demonstrated success working with high-school age students, ideally in a residential experience. Coaching or counseling experience is valued.

The appointment is for one school year, beginning in late August through the first week of June. Compensation includes a $12,500 stipend, room, board, health benefits and a season pass to the Steamboat Ski Area.
